Sarah M. Cradit is quickly becoming one of my all-time favourite romantasy authors <3 A few months ago, I read and reviewed The Claw and the Crowned. This time, let’s dive into the world of The Poison and the Paladin.
The Poison and the Paladin
Meet Edriss Blackwood, a young woman who hides her heart’s biggest secret: she has fallen for the man who has always been her bodyguard. Years ago, Lorcan James swore to protect her, the younger sister of his best friend. Honour forbids him from acting on the feelings that have grown for her over time. But it’s also honour that will force them apart as their friend Arwenna convinces Lorcan to pretend to be her lover…
Another remarkable tale
I simply adore any tale that flows out of Sarah M. Cradit‘s pen. In a sense, this story is a bit lighter than what I usually read, with friends-to-lovers, cinnamon roll hero, and bodyguard romance as main tropes. I’m usually a more morally-grey, enemies-to-lovers kind of girl, but I have to say I very much appreciated the romance in this book as well. I also really liked the “poison mistress”, “botanical witch” vibes.
Similar to the other stand-alone stories in this series, The Poison and the Paladin starts out with an introduction that frames the tale and tells the reader what to expect without spoiling anything. Every time I read one of those intros, I wonder why not more authors are including them. This book also has the best dedication I’ve seen in a while.
As always, the novel is accompanied by various beautiful illustrations, which give the book that little extra magical touch.
Once again, an amazing Romantasy tale that you don’t want to miss. Four out of five gemstones!

In this section, I am going to explore the place of The Poison and the Paladin in the wider works of Sarah M. Cradit.
This novel is part six of The Book of All Things, which is a series of interconnected, standalone fantasy romance books that is set in the Kingdom of the White Sea World. This fantasy realm was first introduced in the Kingdom of the White Sea Trilogy, which starts off with The Kingless Crown.
The books of The Book of All Things are grouped together into cycles, which each have their own heat level: The Blackwood Cycle (low heat); The Southerlands Cycle (medium low heat); The Guardians Cycle (medium heat); The Darkwood Cycle (medium high heat); and the Sceptre Cycle (high heat).
The Poison and the Paladin is the second book of The Blackwood Cycle. The first book is called The Raven and the Rush.
The next book set to be published is The Belle and the Blackbird, the second book of The Guardians Cycle. I, for one, can hardly wait <3
