Unboxing: AnderWereld July 2021 – Dark YA Fantasy

IT’S HERE! The July book box by AnderWereld experienced a bit of delay, but the wait was definitely worth it!

About AnderWereld

AnderWereld is a great bookstore specialising in Fantasy, Science Fiction and Young Adult fiction in both Dutch and English. They offer different monthly book boxes as well as a yearly subscription. Next to that, you can also ask them to create a personalised second-hand book box for you.

The teaser

As is the case for most book boxes, AnderWereld publishes some teasers about the books they select for their mystery boxes. For the English Urban Fantasy box of August, we received the following hints:

  • A girl who holds the power of the banished gods inside her
  • She must bind herself to a violent ruler to save her crumbling world
  • If you can’t tame your demons, set them free*

Can you already guess the book?

*OMG how amazing is that quotation?

The goodies

When I opened the box, I first spotted a bag of tea by Letters & Lights. According to the spoiler card, this tea will be blood red. It was named after the banished gods from the story, “The Noble and the Vile”. Sounds delightfully creepy, doesn’t it! Unfortunately, I cannot read the full ingredient list, but I’m sure it’s a green tea with hibiscus.

Next, there’s also a leather pocket to store keys in, made by Dromeleijn. It has a little skull attached to it, and, as you might have seen on the picture, the book cover shows a keyhole, so this item is also very fitting!

I was most excited by the handmade bracelet by Elfenstershop. It fully fits the theme of the box with its red and black beads, and the little skull and key charms. Very pretty!

Finally, there’s the monthly bookmark, with a design by Hollow Moon Art. It incorporates the books of all three boxes available in July. For the book of this box, it shows a girl with chains, locks, and keys.

The book

I couldn’t exactly recall the theme I chose in July, but the book’s cover screams “dark”. I wouldn’t have taken it for a YA book at first sight, though. I’m talking about What we Devour by Linsey Miller, of course.

The book tells the story of a girl who hides the power within her, linked to the banished gods. She has been hiding her entire life and is perfectly happy with her quiet existence. Until one day, the bloodthirsty crown prince comes to arrest the father of her fiancé. She decides to make a deal with him: her soon-to-be father-in-law will get a fair trial, in return for her service to the crown.

I love it already! What do you think? Sounds amazingly creepy, right?
