Last month, I unboxed my very first Fairyloot YA box. This Month, I will not be unboxing one, but two of their boxes as they launched their very first Adult book-only box. Let’s start with the Young Adult box today.
About Fairyloot
Fairyloot is one of the best known UK book boxes that ship internationally. They offer two types of subscription plans: Young Adult (book box with goodies or book-only) and Adult (book-only). In most cases, their featured books are fantasy books. Next to their monthly subscription, they also have special edition boxes and exclusive editions.
The teaser
This is the info we received upfront:
- The box is dedicated to characters who fight against destiny and take control of their own fate
- Retelling of the classic Korean folktale of Shim Cheong.
- Enchanting and lyrical story
The goodies
The first thing I found was a tea tin, inspired by the featured book. With the amount of tea that I receive via book boxes, it’s a good thing that they sometimes also send tea tins! I really like its pastel colours.
Next, I discovered a set of playing cards, inspired by Six Crimson Cranes, Jade Fire Gold, Only a monster, and Daughter of the Moon Goddess. I loved the quality and general look and feel of these cards! They are way too beautiful to play with them though, so they will become a collector’s item.
The box also included a cushion cover inspired by Raybearer. I’m not the biggest fan of cushion covers, to be honest, so I will be looking to sell it.
My favourite part of the Fairyloot YA boxes is always the set of tarot cards. Last month, they completed their original deck, and luckily, they decided to start a new one right away. The new one is called the Celestial Deck and these first cards depict the characters of Daughter of the Moon Goddess as the Fool and the Magician. LOVE these cards!
Last but not least, the box contained a woodmark inspired by Circe and a sticker sheet inspired by The Raven Cycle (my review). Both are items I will not use so I’ll be selling them, but nevertheless, they are quire cute.
The book
The featured book is The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh. The Fairyloot edition is simply stunning with its exclusive cover, two coloured stencil sprayed edges, artwork on the endpapers, and foil embossing on the hardcover. It is also signed by the author and came with a letter from said author.
This is the tale of a girl who decides to take the place of her brother’s beloved and offers herself as bride to the sea god. I’ve started reading it, but I stopped after the first chapter. I find that I’m not (yet?) all that interested in lyrical adult fantasy novels (even though the book was part of the YA box, I would classify it as adult). I will definitely keep it though and revisit it later on.
