Comments & Contact us

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Social media accounts and sharing options are available on this website via the WordPress plugin Shared Counts. Social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and so forth) can track your personal information. Should you choose to interact with us on social media, please note that you will be voluntarily disclosing that personal information. This information is no longer private. It becomes public information and can be collected and used by others. We have no control over and take no responsibility for the use, storage or dissemination of such publicly disclosed personal information by you.

Any such interactions via comments and social media with us do not subject us to any kind of liability related to misuse of your information by others.

By using the contact us form, you are asked to share with us your name, email addresss and anything you want to put in the message field. Our forms are created using WPForms, which is a GDPR compliant WordPress plugin.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Cookies

For more information about our cookie usage, please consult our Cookie Policy.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Whom do we share your data with?

We are not a commercial organisation, nor do we have ties to one. However, we do include Affiliate links to online book shops on our blog posts (i.e. Bol.com & Amazon.nl). This means that if you click on them and purchase, a small commission is given to us at no extra cost to you whatsoever. This also entails though that they know that you were sent to that purchase via our blog.

You can also opt to subscribe to updates via email. Our emails and contact list are managed via Sendinblue. The email address that you provide is transferred to them in accordance with their privacy policy (see plugin list below for link). You can unsubscribe at any time via the link at the bottom of our emails.

How long do we retain your data?

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

What rights do you have over your data?

If you have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where do we send your data?

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
