Unboxing: Tiny Tree Trunk September 2021 – “A Gift & a Curse”

I’ve received another wonderful book box by Tiny Tree Trunk last week!

About Tiny Tree Trunk

Tiny Tree Trunk is an online company specialising in book boxes for children and young adults, as well as special occasion boxes (e.g. a box for Mother’s Day, a Fall box). There are multiple boxes available each month, as well as a Dutch and an English yearly subscription. What’s special about these boxes is that some (i.e. the specials) allow buyers to select a book themselves up to a maximum amount. Like that, you can personalise a box as a gift to someone, for example.  For the boxes with a fixed book, you can either choose to be surprised, or scroll down to the bottom of the page to already discover which book will be included.

The teaser

For my first box in August, I chose a Dutch YA one, which contained Water (Tithe) by Holly Black . My unboxing of that box can be found here. In September, I chose an English YA box called “A Gift & a Curse”.

The hints that were given were as follows:

  • A magical story about an incredible quest
  • Royals, magic, unique magical creatures, enemies to lovers and a great twist
  • Beautiful cover and signed bookplate + author letter

There was also a short description given by the author: “My book is set in an inclusive world, with no discrimination or prejudice rooted in sex, gender, or sexuality. The two romances at the center of the book are m/f and m/m.”

I was not able to guess the title, are you?

The goodies

The first thing I found in the box was a golden quill. This goodie couldn’t be more perfect for me, seeing that we will renovate our library as the Ravenclaw common room. It will look absolutely perfect on my desk <3 All I need now is a fancy ink well! On the package of the quill, there was also a quotation from the book.

Next, I found two little blank notebooks. I think I will use these as my new reading journals, seeing that they are quite small and thus easy to handle while reading. Both were printed exclusively for Tiny Tree Trunk and the design also fits quite well with the theme of the box.

There was also a wooden magnet with a quote from the book, a button with a mouse (illustrated by Rooftopknights), and a totebag with “Always in search for star dust” on it. And a stunningly beautiful bookmark with a fox and a full moon and a quotation from the book on the other side <3 <3 <3

Last but not least, I discovered a bag of Tea “from the land of giants” and a few teabags. The tea is described as “a blend with a will of its own” and contains pear, mango, papaya, pineapple, blue berries, tiny pieces of almond, rose petals and mallow.

Most of these goodies have a link to the different animals that play a role in the story. Seeing that I love animals and magical creatures, this made me even more enthusiastic to start reading!

Once again a box in which everything fits well together. I’m impressed, Tiny Tree Trunk!

The book

I’m terribly pleased with the book that was included in this box: Forestborn by Elayne Audrey Becker, the first part of a new YA fantasy duology. It tells the story of Rora, a shifter who uses her powers to spy for the king. When a magical illness threatens the kingdom and the prince is taken ill, Rora decides to do whatever is necessary to find the one thing that will save her friend: stardust, the rarest of all magical elements.

Doesn’t this just sound delightful? I cannot wait to start reading!
